Not In Our Own Strength

Zechariah 4:6

"Then he answered and spake unto me, saying,  This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, sayeth the Lord of hosts.

God's word came to His people at a critical time.  They had been captured and exiled in Babylon for 70 years.  During which they had witnessed the most powerful empire in the known world   They had watched as the Babylonian army captured and defeated nation after nation. They had seen the wealth and influence of the Babylonian King.  When Babylon was conquered by Persia, they saw an even more powerful nation emerge and they must have felt inadequate and helpless before their strength and might.  They lost hope and heart in light of their own lack of strength, resources and numbers.

When the Israelites were allowed to return home, they found their country and cities in ruins.  They saw their magnificent temple destroyed and their city walls torn down.  It must have been overwhelming for them. As they realized the enourmous task of rebuilding before them along with their own lack of ability and supplies they must have become greatly despondant, even to the point of giving up altogether.

Then came God's Word.  God gave them instructions to rebuild and the promise that they would rebuild their home.  But it would not be in their own strength, abilities and resources that it would be accomplished, but rather by His Spirit that it would be done.

Christian, we too are in a critical time.  We live in a world that is desperate in it's need for the saving love of Jesus Christ.  There will be times when the work we are called to as His people, will seem impossible.  There will be times when realize our own lack of numbers, resources and strength especially when compared to the enormous task that lay ahead.  If we look to our own strength, or own power, resources and abilities, we will be discouraged.

I can only imagine how the past 1 1/2 years has been discouraging at times.  But looking back over the 150+  year history of Pleasant Hill, you have seen time and time again how our mighty God has provided, especially during the lean years.  It is those times that have seen the mighty hand of God so evident that will increase your faith.

Moving forward, the work that God has called us to do will not be easy.  There is much to do at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and in our community.  We must get busy about his business because the clock is ticking.    As we do the work together, we must also remember that we do not work in our strength but in God's.

God owns the cattle on a thousand hills and we must keep our eyes off of our limited abilities and on to God and trust in Him.  As long as we are united while we work and rely in the strength of God's spirit, we have all that we will ever need.

2. Church, be united; God called you together for the purpose of praying, encouraging and serving the cause of Christ to a needy world.

A Penny's Worth of Thought

A Penny's Worth of Thought is a devotional blog written by the Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Jonathan McGary.  The source of this devotional blog is not only from the Bible but most often from the pastor's personal devotions.  The purpose of the blog is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and His power to free from the penalty of sin, as well as to change your point of view.  We often look at things the same way all our lives.  Allow God through His word to open your heart and mind to change.  Only God can bring about real change.
